988
988 is the national mental health crisis line in the United States, created to make it easier for people to get help during emotional or mental health emergencies. It is a free, confidential, 24/7 service that people can call, text, or chat to reach a trained crisis counselor who can listen, help calm the situation, and offer support or resources. The line is for anyone in crisis or anyone worried about a loved one. Before 988, most mental health emergencies went through 911, which was not designed for emotional distress, so 988 provides a health-first response and helps reduce unnecessary police involvement by connecting people with mental health professionals instead.
